This old stone house, emblematic of traditional Cape Verdean architecture, has been completely restored and carefully extended. It combines the charm of yesteryear with modern comfort, in a warm and relaxed atmosphere.

The old stone building underwent an ambitious renovation, combining respect for heritage with contemporary boldness. The project consisted of a complete restructuring of the interior: the first floor was entirely demolished in order to start again on a more solid and functional foundation. However, certain iconic features have been preserved, such as the basket-handle windows, which are true architectural gems. Carefully restored, they continue to play an essential role in providing natural light, ventilation, thermal and acoustic insulation, while enhancing the aesthetics of the façade. Their presence gives the building an authentic and warm character that gives it its soul.
Instead of the former single level, two full floors and an additional half-floor have been created, offering considerably more living space. While the original stone façade has been retained to preserve the traditional identity of the local architecture, the interior now adopts a resolutely contemporary style: bright, uncluttered and optimised to meet current needs.
One remarkable artistic detail also sets this restoration apart: on one of the façades, Hokusai’s famous 1830 masterpiece, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, has been meticulously reproduced in stone. A universal symbol of the power of nature and the passage of time, this wave embodies a subtle balance between stability and movement, between memory and modernity.
This major project, which took nearly two years to complete, is part of an initiative to enhance the value of Boa Vista’s historic buildings. It perfectly illustrates the desire to combine heritage preservation with contemporary comfort, creating a space that is both timeless and resolutely forward-looking.
